Synthesis of benzylidenemalonaldehydes

Abstract
A general two-step synthesis of benzylidenemalonaldehydes (V), based on condensation of substituted benzaldehydes with 1,3-bis(dimethylamino)trimethinium perchlorate, is described. The course of this reaction, character of the intermediate and spectral characteristics of the products are discussed. The obtained dialdehydes are classified as new organic Lewis acids.
